What Is the Difference Between an Angel, Archangel, Guardian Angel, and Spirit Guide?
Have you ever heard someone say, “My mother passed away, and now she’s my Guardian Angel”? Or maybe you’ve wondered whether the presence you feel around you is an Angel, a Spirit Guide, or a loved one who has crossed over.
These terms are often used interchangeably, but in the way I have experienced and teach the spirit world, they are not the same.
Angels, Archangels, and Guardian Angels belong to what I call the Angelic Realm. Spirit Guides belong to another realm. Our loved ones who have crossed over are in another. There are also Masters, Ascended Masters, and other energies within the spirit world.
That may sound like there are a lot of divisions, but I don’t experience those realms as having rigid boundaries.
Think of the Spirit World Like New England
One of the easiest ways I explain the different realms is by using where I live here in New England.
Imagine the Angels are in Connecticut. Your Spirit Guides are in Massachusetts. Your loved ones are in Rhode Island. Maybe the Masters are in New Hampshire and the Ascended Masters are in Maine.
They are in different places, but nobody needs a passport to cross the state line.
They can communicate with one another. They can communicate with us. And depending on what is happening in your life, you may experience support from different realms at different times.
Understanding the realms simply gives us some language for recognizing who we may be connecting with.
What Is an Angel?
The word angel means “messenger of God,” and I think that description says a great deal about their purpose.
Angels are light beings. In the framework I teach, Angels have not lived in human bodies. They have not had the human experience of being born, growing up, dealing with relationships, paying bills, making decisions, experiencing grief, or trying to figure out what they are supposed to be doing with their lives.
They are here to support us.
I think of Angels as the many “worker Angels” within the Angelic Realm. They may help us with our prayers, offer guidance, surround us with love, or simply remind us that we are not trying to get through this human experience alone.
And sometimes, I need a lot of them.
I have been known to say, “I need 10,000 Angels to get me through today.”
If that’s what I need, I believe they’re available.
What Is an Archangel?
I jokingly call the Archangels the senior managers of the Angelic Realm.
Archangels have the ability to work throughout the different levels of the Angelic Realm, and each one tends to be associated with a particular quality or area of support.
For example:
- Archangel Michael is commonly associated with protection.
- Archangel Ariel can help us with our basic needs and our relationship with the physical world.
- Archangel Jeremiel is associated with life review and helping us look at our lives from a greater perspective.
That doesn’t mean Archangel Michael can only help with protection or that Jeremiel can only help with life review. Think of these qualities more like specialties than job descriptions.
They give us a place to begin.
If I am struggling with something related to protection, I may call upon Michael because I already understand that aspect of his energy. Over time, we begin building a relationship with these energies instead of simply calling a name because we read it in a book.
Within the metaphysical traditions I work with, Metatron and Sandalphon are often considered unusual within the Angelic Realm because they are described as having experienced human incarnation before becoming Archangels.
Mother Mary is another interesting example. She is sometimes referred to as the Queen of the Angels. That doesn’t make her an Angel. She had a human experience and is considered a different type of spiritual presence.
The labels help us understand the energy, but the spirit world is much bigger than the labels we give it.
What Is a Guardian Angel?
Guardian Angels are much more personal.
I believe our Guardian Angels are part of the council that is with us before we come into this physical life.
I tell my students that I believe we have at least one Guardian Angel, and I tend to experience people as having at least two.
I often describe them as the quiet one and the loud one.
Forget the cartoon with the Angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. I picture two Angels.
One says quietly, “You might want to pay attention to this.”
And when we don’t listen, the other one says, “PAY ATTENTION!”
I had a client many years ago who experienced exactly that.
She was driving down a road that is now a major turnpike, but at the time it was much less developed. This was also before seatbelt laws were what they are today, so wearing one wasn’t necessarily automatic.
As she was driving, she heard:
“Put on your seatbelt.”
She thought, essentially, Okay, okay.
Then she heard it again.
“PUT ON YOUR SEATBELT.”
She grabbed the seatbelt and fastened it.
Within about a minute, a tree fell onto her car.
The car was badly damaged, but she was okay.
Experiences like that are why I encourage people to pay attention when guidance comes seemingly out of nowhere, especially when it is clear, loving, and persistent.
Sometimes the quiet Angel gets our attention.
Sometimes we apparently need the loud one.
What Is a Spirit Guide?
The biggest distinction I make between an Angel and a Spirit Guide is simple:
A Spirit Guide has had a human experience.
They have lived in a physical body. They understand what it is like to navigate life here because they have done it themselves.
Spirit Guides have crossed into the spirit world and have chosen to continue assisting those of us having a human experience.
I believe our Spirit Guides are also part of the team or council connected with us before we enter this lifetime. They understand aspects of the life experience we came here to have, and they help guide us through it.
I also look at the relationship as beneficial to both sides.
We are still growing as souls while we are here. Our Spirit Guides are still growing as souls as well.
By helping us become better humans, they continue learning how to become better guides.
It is a relationship.
Do Spirit Guides Have Different Jobs?
Spirit Guides are often placed into categories. I also remind my students that these categories are largely human ways of making sense of the spirit world.
They aren’t necessarily walking around wearing name badges with job titles.
Still, those categories can help us understand the type of guidance we are receiving.
In the system I teach, you may encounter guides such as:
- A Joy Guide, often experienced as a younger energy that reminds us to bring joy, curiosity, and play back into our lives.
- A Native American Guide, often associated with direction and helping us navigate our path. I sometimes describe this guide as our spiritual GPS.
- A Doctor of Alchemy or Alchemist, associated with manifestation, healing, and physical concerns.
- A Doctor of Philosophy or Teacher Guide, who may help us see situations from a higher perspective.
Just like the Archangels, these are specialties rather than limitations.
My Doctor of Philosophy doesn’t refuse to speak to me because I have asked a question outside his department.
But if I am stuck in my thinking and need to see something differently, I know that particular guide often steps forward.
Once you build a relationship with your Spirit Team, you begin recognizing their personalities and how they work with you.
Do Angels and Spirit Guides Feel Different?
For me, absolutely.
Angels feel light.
Their energy can feel expansive, loving, bright, and often very colorful.
Spirit Guides feel more human to me. Their energy can feel denser or heavier than Angelic energy—not in a negative way, but simply more like standing beside another person.
I saw this difference very clearly during Spirit Camp this summer.
During the first week, we worked with Spirit Guides. Some participants had very strong experiences. Others said, “Maybe I got something,” or, “Nope. I didn’t really feel anything.”
The second week we worked with Angels.
Several of the people who had struggled to connect with their guides suddenly had very strong experiences.
One of the common descriptions was color.
“There was color everywhere.”
That makes perfect sense to me because Angelic energy often presents itself that way.
And this is one of the reasons I teach people to explore more than one realm.
You may have a much easier natural connection with Angels than with Spirit Guides.
Someone sitting beside you may have exactly the opposite experience.
Neither person is doing it wrong.
You Receive Through the Same Four Clairs
Regardless of whether you are connecting with an Angel, Archangel, Guardian Angel, Spirit Guide, or loved one, you still receive information through your own intuitive system.
That may include the four primary clairs:
- Clairvoyance — clear seeing
- Clairaudience — clear hearing
- Clairsentience — clear feeling
- Claircognizance — clear knowing
This becomes important when people get hung up on things like names.
Someone will ask me, “What is my Guardian Angel’s name?”
My answer is often: Why don’t you learn it?
That relationship belongs to you.
And if clairaudience isn’t your strongest way of receiving information, you may never hear someone announce a name.
You might see the name written in your mind.
You might simply know it.
You might feel drawn repeatedly toward a certain name.
Or the name may not matter at all right now.
You do not need to know your Guide’s name to work with your Guide.
Start with the relationship. The rest can come later.
Why I Had to Learn to Separate the Realms
When I first began doing readings, Angels were the easiest energy for me to connect with.
Then I began experiencing human energies coming through.
At one event, I kept receiving people during readings and describing them to the person sitting with me. But the client couldn’t identify them.
No. Nope. I don’t know who that is.
By the time I drove home that night, I was frustrated.
I basically told the spirit world, “If I can’t get this right, I’m not doing the Mediumship part anymore.”
The response I received was:
“Don’t forget the guides.”
My reaction was essentially, “Who are the guides?”
That began another stage of my development.
I realized some of the human energies I was perceiving weren’t deceased relatives at all. They were members of the person’s Spirit Team.
Because the client didn’t know their guides, they had no way to validate the descriptions I was giving them.
That experience eventually changed the way I work.
When I do readings now, I create a system within my own energy field.
I place loved ones who have crossed on one side of me. I place Spirit Team members on the other side. Angelic and higher energies are experienced above and to my left.
Is that where everybody in the spirit world actually stands?
Of course not.
That is my system.
But having a system helps me recognize the source of the information instead of mixing everyone together.
I encourage my students to create a system that works for them as well.
Does a Loved One Become an Angel When They Die?
This is probably one of the most common misunderstandings.
Someone will say, “My dad died, and now he’s my Angel.”
I understand what they mean emotionally.
Their father is still connected to them. They may feel him around them. They may believe he watches over them.
But within the framework I teach, he has not become an Angel.
He had a human body.
He remains your loved one in spirit.
The same is true when someone says, “My mother is my Spirit Guide now.”
Your loved one may absolutely offer guidance. If they had spiritual knowledge during their lifetime, perhaps they may even serve as a teacher in some capacity.
But that does not necessarily make them one of the Spirit Guides who was part of your team before you entered this lifetime.
Sometimes we get too concerned about upgrading everyone’s title after they die.
They don’t need another title.
Your mother can simply still be your mother.
Why Don’t Angels and Guides Just Fix Everything?
This comes up frequently.
If I have Guardian Angels and Spirit Guides helping me, why did this terrible thing happen?
Why didn’t they stop it?
My belief is that spiritual support does not remove our free will or erase the human experiences we came here to have.
We have to ask for help.
That is why I encourage people to actually have conversations with their spiritual team.
Ask for guidance.
Ask for clarity.
Ask for support.
Ask them to help you see something differently.
There are also experiences we may need to move through because they are part of our growth. In those situations, I don’t believe our spiritual team necessarily removes the circumstance.
They may instead help us navigate it.
There is a big difference between:
“Please make this disappear.”
and
“Help me understand how to move through this.”
I also believe there are circumstances involving our physical safety where spiritual intervention can occur when an event is not part of the soul’s planned departure from this life.
Ultimately, though, I don’t look at Angels and Guides as beings whose job is to prevent anything difficult from ever happening.
Their role is to help us navigate being human.
Angel Numbers and the Ways Confirmation Can Show Up
Communication doesn’t always happen through a voice or a vision.
Sometimes we receive confirmation through synchronicities.
Years ago, I was preparing for a large Angel event and found myself worrying about registration, attendance, and all the pieces I couldn’t control.
Finally, I said, “I have to focus on presenting. I am handing the rest of this off to the Angels.”
That night I went to bed.
My television had an alarm function, and I sometimes used it to wake up in the morning. I knew I had set it for around 8:00.
Instead, I woke up at 4:17 in the morning because the television was on.
I remember looking at the clock thinking, Why is my TV on?
At the time, I had a book about Angel numbers. I looked up 417.
The message was essentially about handing things over to the Angels and trusting that things would be okay.
It reflected almost exactly the conversation I had had before going to sleep.
For me, that wasn’t about the number 417 having magical power.
It was confirmation.
Those moments become meaningful because of the relationship you are already building.
You Don’t Have to Connect With Everyone
When people first learn about Spirit Guides, Angels, Archangels, and all the other energies available to them, there can be a temptation to meet everybody immediately.
Please don’t.
Keep it simple.
If you are connecting with your Spirit Team, start with the guide who feels strongest.
Work with that presence.
Learn how that energy feels.
Notice how information comes to you.
Build trust.
When another guide is ready to introduce themselves, they will.
You can do the same thing with the Angelic Realm.
You don’t need to learn every Archangel and memorize every characteristic before you can ask for support.
Start somewhere.
How Do I Begin Connecting With Angels or Spirit Guides?
Start by becoming quiet enough to notice.
You might use:
- Meditation
- Journaling
- Quiet reflection
- Prayer
- Asking a question and noticing what comes afterward
- Paying attention to recurring thoughts, images, feelings, words, or synchronicities
Then get curious.
Who is giving me this information?
How does this presence feel?
Does this feel light and expansive?
Does it feel more like another human presence?
How am I receiving the information?
And don’t force an answer.
Relationship takes time.
If you walked up to a stranger on the street and immediately asked them to tell you what to do with the biggest problem in your life, you probably wouldn’t blindly trust their answer.
Why would your spiritual relationships be any different?
Get to know your team.
As you recognize how they communicate with you, you begin developing trust in the guidance you receive.
We Didn’t Come Here Alone
This may be the most important thing I want people to understand.
We didn’t come into this human life alone.
Whatever your understanding of a higher power may be, I believe there are many energies available to help us navigate our time here.
Being a soul in a human body is not always easy.
We think.
We feel.
We worry.
We love.
We get angry.
We experience loss, uncertainty, excitement, disappointment, hope, and everything in between.
Angels, Archangels, Guardian Angels, Spirit Guides, loved ones, and other spiritual energies don’t necessarily remove those experiences.
They remind us that we don’t have to navigate them without support.
If you’re beginning to explore these relationships, don’t worry about learning everyone’s name or identifying every presence perfectly.
Start with one.
Notice what feels strongest.
Get quiet.
Ask.
Listen in the way you naturally receive.
Then allow the relationship to develop.
That is where connection begins.
If you’d like some guidance getting started, my Meet Your Angels and Meet Your Guides meditations can help you become familiar with each type of energy and begin noticing how those connections feel different for you.
And if you would like to go deeper into understanding the Angelic Realm and learning how to work with Angels intentionally, Angel Connections gives you an opportunity to explore that relationship, understand how Angels communicate through the four clairs, and practice receiving Angelic guidance for yourself and others.
Here’s the clean WordPress-ready draft. I kept the spiritual concepts grounded in your experience and the framework you teach, rather than presenting them as universal doctrine.
