The words Psychic and Medium are often used as though they mean the same thing. They do not.
The difference comes down to where the information is coming from.
A Psychic reads energy. A Medium connects with the spirit world.
There can be some overlap between the two, which is why the labels can become confusing. Every Medium works psychically because we are always working with energy. However, not every Psychic communicates with loved ones who have died.
This is the easiest way I explain it:
All Mediums are psychic, but not all Psychics are Mediums.
What Does a Psychic Do?
A Psychic connects with the energy of the person receiving the reading, who is often called the sitter.
We are all energetic beings. When we spend time with another person, enter a room, or think deeply about something, we create and exchange energetic information.
A Psychic can pick up impressions from that energy.
Those impressions may involve:
- Relationships
- Work
- Personal challenges
- Decisions
- Emotions
- Patterns
- Future possibilities
The Psychic may see, hear, feel, or simply know information about the sitter. They may not know exactly where the information originated. They are reading what is present in the sitter’s energy field.
I personally receive a great deal of information through feeling and knowing. When I connect with someone psychically, I may feel what is happening in their body, sense what is weighing on their mind, or understand the general direction the session needs to take.
There is not necessarily a Spirit standing beside me and telling me this information. I am reading the sitter’s energy.
Everyone Has Psychic Ability
I teach that everyone is psychic.
You may not use that word to describe yourself, but you have probably experienced a psychic connection.
Years ago, when most people had landline phones, you might suddenly think about someone and decide to call them. You would pick up the receiver, and they would already be on the other end because they were calling you at the same time.
You may walk into a workshop and feel drawn to sit beside one particular person. Later, you discover there was a reason the two of you connected.
You may know that something is wrong with someone you care about before they tell you.
These experiences come from our energetic interconnectedness.
Some people naturally notice this information more clearly than others. Psychic development is often less about acquiring an entirely new ability and more about learning how to recognize, understand, and trust what you are already receiving.
What Does a Medium Do?
A Medium communicates with souls who continue to exist after the death of the physical body.
The word Medium describes the role the person is serving. The Medium becomes the bridge between the physical world and the spirit world.
During a Mediumship reading, a loved one in Spirit may communicate information about:
- Their identity
- Their personality
- Their relationship with the sitter
- Their life
- Their passing
- Memories they shared
- What has happened in the family since their death
- A message they want to offer
The purpose of Mediumship is not simply to say that someone is standing nearby. The purpose is to create a meaningful connection between the sitter and a specific soul in Spirit.
That is where evidential Mediumship becomes important.
What Is an Evidential Medium?
A Medium may say, “I have a mother energy. She is standing in a kitchen wearing an apron and looking out the window while she washes dishes. The kitchen was her happy place.”
That may feel comforting, but it is also fairly general. That description could apply to many mothers and grandmothers.
An evidential Medium provides specific information that helps the sitter identify the Spirit communicator.
The Medium may describe:
- The person’s age when they died
- The cause or circumstances of their passing
- A specific medical condition
- Their occupation
- A physical marking
- A personality trait
- An unusual habit
- A private memory
- A distinctive relationship dynamic
The sitter should be able to hear the evidence and say, “I know exactly who this is.”
Evidential Mediumship gives the sitter a reason to trust that the Medium is communicating with a specific loved one, rather than offering a general description that could apply to almost anyone.
Accurate Information Is Not Always Mediumship
A reader can give you accurate information without communicating with a loved one in Spirit.
Imagine you are going to a psychic fair in the afternoon. That morning, you are sitting at home thinking about how badly you need a vacation. You begin looking online at cruises.
A few hours later, you sit down with a reader. The reader connects with your energy and says, “I feel like you are going on a cruise.”
You may be amazed because you had just been looking at cruises that morning.
The reader accurately picked up the cruise, but that does not automatically mean a loved one in Spirit told them about it.
The idea of the cruise was already active in your energy field. A Psychic could read that information directly from you.
A Medium should be able to tell you who is communicating the information and provide evidence that supports the identity of that Spirit.
The accuracy of the information matters, but the source of the information also matters.
How I Begin a Reading
I have used the same basic system in my readings for almost 20 years.
I do not alter the structure depending on the client. That consistency helps me know what to expect, and I believe it helps the spirit world know what I expect from the communication.
At the beginning of a session, I ask the sitter to say their first and last name aloud.
Names carry energy. Hearing the name helps me connect with the sitter’s energy field.
I may begin by sensing what is happening in their life. I may feel that they have a great deal happening mentally, that work has become overwhelming, or that the session will include questions about a relationship.
This is psychic information.
From there, I may connect with an angel, a guide, or another higher-vibrational energy. These connections involve the spirit world, although they are not always what a person means when they say they want a Mediumship reading.
Angels and guides may provide direction, answer questions, or help the sitter understand what they are currently experiencing.
As this part of the session unfolds, the sitter’s loved ones in Spirit are also preparing to communicate.
I describe it as though they are lining up behind a red velvet rope at Studio 54. I need them ready to come forward with clear information.
I do not want a Spirit communicator to arrive half-formed with only a vague statement that a man or father figure is present. I want the communication to be developed enough that the Spirit can provide the evidence the sitter needs.
Why I Use a Consistent Mediumship System
When I move into the Mediumship portion of a reading, I ask each Spirit communicator a consistent set of questions.
I think of it as their name, rank, and serial number.
Those questions help me gather information that allows the sitter to identify the person. Once the sitter confirms the evidence, I can continue building the connection and bring through additional memories, personality, and messages.
The transition from psychic work to Mediumship does not always feel like a sharp change. It often blends together.
I am still psychically connected to the sitter while I am communicating with Spirit. I describe the sitter as the battery that helps support the connection.
I feel the sitter’s energy, open the door to the spirit world, and then receive the Spirit communicator through my own strongest abilities.
I primarily feel and know information. Another Medium may see detailed images or hear specific words. We all receive information differently.
The system does not force every Medium to work in the same way. It gives the Medium a dependable structure for using their own strengths.
What Is a Psychic Medium?
The term psychic Medium is commonly used, but it can also add to the confusion.
All Mediums are already psychic because they are working with energy. A Medium needs psychic awareness to connect with the sitter and interpret the information being received.
However, using both words can help the public understand that the reader offers both personal guidance and Spirit communication.
The important question is not only what label the reader uses. The important question is what kind of service they actually provide.
Should You See a Psychic or a Medium?
The right choice depends on what you want from the session.
Choose a Psychic When You Want Guidance
A psychic reading may be helpful when you want insight about your life, relationships, work, decisions, emotional patterns, or personal direction.
Tarot readers, oracle card readers, palm readers, and rune readers often work psychically. They are interpreting the energy of the tool as it relates to the sitter.
An angel reader may also provide guidance by connecting with angelic energy.
Choose a Medium When You Want Spirit Communication
A Mediumship reading is the more appropriate choice when you want to connect with a loved one who has died.
Look for someone who explains whether they practice evidential Mediumship and how they establish the identity of the Spirit communicator.
A Medium should not need you to provide the person’s full story before the reading begins. The evidence should come through the Medium and be validated by you.
Mediumship Is a Natural Ability and a Trained Skill
My own development began with angel connections and angel card readings.
At that stage, I was working psychically with the cards and with the sitter’s energy. Over time, loved ones in Spirit began appearing during the readings.
In the beginning, those connections were Mediumistic, but they were not always strongly evidential. I might sense that a father figure was present without receiving enough specific information to prove who he was.
I also connected with other energies that clients could not identify. I eventually understood that some of those communicators were likely members of the person’s spirit team or Spirit Guides rather than deceased loved ones.
My evidential Mediumship became stronger when I established a clear system.
The system made my readings cleaner, more consistent, and more dependable. I was no longer waiting to see whether someone happened to show up. I knew how I would begin, what evidence I needed, and how I would move through the connection.
Natural ability gives us a starting point. Structured Mediumship training teaches us how to understand our strengths, create a consistent system, and use that ability responsibly and confidently.
I can teach a class of ten students, and each student may have a different strength. One may see clearly. Another may feel physical sensations. Someone else may hear names or phrases. Another person may simply know information without understanding how they know it.
My job as a teacher is to help each student discover their strongest way of receiving information. They do not need to copy another Medium. They need to understand how their own system works.
What Makes a Good Reading?
A good reading is not simply one where unusual information is shared.
The sitter should receive information that is helpful, usable, and relevant to their life.
In a Mediumship reading, they should also receive enough evidence to feel confident that their loved one was truly part of the connection.
The reading should leave them with greater understanding, comfort, direction, or healing.
Psychic work and Mediumship can both be valuable. They simply serve different purposes.
A Psychic helps you understand the energy surrounding your life.
A Medium helps you connect with the souls who continue to exist beyond physical death.
An evidential Medium provides the specific details that help you know who has come through and why that connection matters.
